Applying The pendulum-putting-stroke3 (Part 3)

Translate this site

pendulum-putting-stroke3.Now that we are all set up from reading the previous articles we are ready to start applying the technique.

Once your shoulders are set, bend forward from your hips until your eyes are directly over the ball. You want your eyes directly over the ball so when you tilt your head to look at the target, you're looking right down the chute at the target.

It's best if you have your dominant eye precisely over the ball. The bend from the hips is also important. You want to make sure you bend enough so that your arms can hang straight down over the ball. If you stand up too straight, you'll yank the putter to the inside when you start it moving.

Once you've made your hip tilt, your arms should hang straight down and loose, like a swimmer on the starting block. Your hands should be directly beneath your shoulders. You've now created a triangle with your shoulders, arms and hands. You are just about ready to put the pendulum-putting-stroke3 into action

Your feet are parallel to your target line, and your weight should favor your left side. If it feels good, pinch your knees in toward the middle. This might help you feel more steady. And don't let your weight get out on the ball so your feet just because you bent forward from the waist. Keep the weight firmly in your heels.

Your ball position will be a little different for putting than for other aspects of your game. What you should do first is sole the putter on the ground so it's even with the middle of your chest. The ball goes right in front of the putter.

You're ready to make your stroke now. The top of your spine is the anchor pin, so to speak. Visualize a seesaw. Your spine is the point in the middle that the seesaw (your shoulders) is balanced upon.

Keep your head steady throughout the stroke. Don't move it at all. The stroke does not have any conscious “hit” to it. The club just maintains its pace and the ball gets in the way. You'll change the length of your stroke depending upon the length of a putt, but you should always swing the club back and through the same distance on a given putt. This never changes.

Important Note: Some players have a difficult time grasping the idea of the pendulum-putting-stroke3 being like a see-saw. Here's a simple drill you can try right there in your living room. Of course you do need your clubs with you:

Take your putter and a club when a long shaft out of the bag. Place the club that isn't your putter between your arms and your torso and hold it just under your elbows. Now take your putter and start making slow, smooth strokes back and forth. If you're making a good stroke, the shaft under your arms will tilt up and down like a seesaw.

Now you get it? And if the shaft pointing toward the target starts pointing left or right, then you're not moving the club straight back and straight through. In other words, you're not doing a Grade A pendulum move. Work this drill and it will help you get the feel down pat.

Follow these tips and drills for the pendulum-putting-stroke3 and pretty soon you will see a big improvement in your putting ability.
